Introduction
Athlete’s foot, also known as tinea pedis, is a fungal skin infection caused by dermatophytes affecting the feet. In fact, many patients experience itching at night after developing athlete’s foot. This occurs because overall mental state is relatively relaxed in the evening, and individuals are less preoccupied with daytime activities—making it easier to focus attention on the feet. Especially during sleep, the sensation of itching on the feet often becomes more pronounced.

Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) is a common condition. If you exercise frequently, your feet tend to sweat profusely, and if you fail to change your shoes and socks promptly, you may develop athlete’s foot. Sharing slippers, foot basins, or towels with others can also lead to fungal infection and athlete’s foot. Once infected, not only do symptoms such as skin peeling and unpleasant odor appear, but pronounced itching is also commonly experienced. So, what should you do when athlete’s foot itches—especially at night?

What to Do When Athlete’s Foot Itches—Especially at Night

Athlete’s foot, also known as tinea pedis, is a fungal skin infection caused by dermatophytes affecting the feet. In fact, many patients report intensified itching at night. This occurs because overall mental relaxation during nighttime—coupled with reduced daytime distractions—makes individuals more aware of bodily sensations, particularly when lying down to sleep. Consequently, itchiness feels more pronounced. During the day, work or other activities may divert attention away from discomfort; however, once under the covers at night, increased foot temperature—due to warmth trapped beneath bedding—can further exacerbate itching. Moreover, dermatophytes thrive in relatively warm, moist environments and may become more metabolically active at night, contributing to heightened itch perception.

If you have athlete’s foot, soak your feet in warm water, thoroughly cleanse them, then gently rub a small amount of sugar over the affected areas repeatedly before rinsing with clean water. With consistent application over time, this method may help resolve the infection and alleviate associated itching. Alternatively, soaking your feet in beer can also relieve itching caused by athlete’s foot. Soak your feet for 20 minutes each session, then rinse thoroughly. Performing this treatment one to two times per week may help ease symptoms and provide effective itch relief.

It is recommended to wash your feet regularly and change shoes and socks frequently. After washing, ensure your feet are completely dry before putting on shoes and socks. Opt for 100% cotton socks, avoid wearing communal slippers, never wear others’ shoes, and prevent others from wearing your shoes. We hope this information proves helpful.
