Introduction
Possible causes of tinnitus in children include: 1. Tinnitus caused by cerumen impaction or foreign bodies in the ear canal. In such cases, removal of the foreign body during otoscopic examination typically resolves the tinnitus. 2. Tinnitus secondary to otitis media with effusion. These patients may also experience associated symptoms such as ear pain, hearing loss, and a sensation of ear fullness. Otoscopic examination may reveal tympanic membrane retraction and middle ear effusion.

In fact, tinnitus is a pathological condition resulting from the cumulative effects of various diseases on the auditory system. The etiology of tinnitus is highly complex, and its underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. So, what causes tinnitus in children?

Causes of Tinnitus in Children

Tinnitus in children may stem from the following causes:

1. Cerumen impaction or foreign bodies in the external auditory canal. In such cases, removal of the foreign body during otoscopic examination typically resolves the tinnitus.

2. Some children develop tinnitus secondary to secretory otitis media, often accompanied by ear pain, hearing loss, and a sensation of fullness or pressure in the ear. Otoscopic examination may reveal tympanic membrane retraction and middle-ear effusion. Tympanometry commonly shows a Type B or Type C curve. Symptoms—including tinnitus—often improve with anti-inflammatory medications and oral mucolytics that promote mucus clearance.

If left untreated, tinnitus can progress to hearing loss. It is not uncommon for patients with hearing impairment to experience persistent tinnitus without timely intervention. Moreover, chronic tinnitus may lead to dizziness, irritability, anxiety, and emotional distress, severely disrupting sleep and resulting in refractory insomnia—ultimately impairing daily functioning and quality of life. People should discard the misconception that tinnitus is merely an innocuous, transient noise near the ear with no significant impact on daily life, and instead seek prompt medical evaluation and treatment.

During illness, it is advisable to maintain a light, bland diet; avoid exposure to loud noises; and ensure adequate sleep. We hope this information proves helpful. Wishing you good health and a joyful life!
