Can cupping be performed during menstruation?
Most people are very familiar with cupping therapy. Cupping can treat a variety of conditions and is widely recognized as an effective therapeutic modality. Since its inception, cupping has resolved numerous health issues for individuals who cannot take oral medications—and has conferred significant benefits upon them. But can cupping be performed during menstruation?
Can cupping be performed during menstruation?
Some individuals enjoy cupping therapy; however, women should avoid cupping during their menstrual period, as their overall health status tends to be suboptimal at this time. Inflammatory hyperemia is often pronounced, potentially causing discomfort such as back pain and abdominal pain. Consequently, performing cupping during menstruation may easily lead to excessive menstrual flow, prolonged menstrual duration, and coagulation dysfunction. Moreover, cupping induces localized capillary rupture and minor bleeding, which—when combined with the natural uterine shedding process—may result in excessive menstrual bleeding, hypotension, or even shock. Therefore, cupping is contraindicated during menstruation; it may be safely performed 3–4 days before the onset of menses or after menstruation has completely ceased.

Cupping is strictly prohibited during menstruation. Performing cupping at this time may prolong the menstrual period and adversely affect health. While cupping promotes systemic blood circulation and unblocks meridians, applying it during menstruation accelerates local blood flow—potentially exacerbating menstrual bleeding. In severe cases, it may trigger uterine hemorrhage or spotting, disrupt endocrine balance, contribute to gynecological disorders, and intensify physical discomfort. If cupping is desired, it is advisable to wait until after menstruation has fully ended.

Patients are advised to avoid raw, cold, spicy, and other stimulating foods; maintain a positive emotional state; refrain from staying up late; and ensure adequate warmth and protection against cold. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
