What symptoms can eye strain cause?
Eye fatigue can cause ocular symptoms; as the condition progresses, gastrointestinal and neurological symptoms may also develop.
1. Ocular Symptoms
Eye fatigue is primarily caused by excessive eye use. Patients commonly experience ocular discomfort, such as blurred vision or double vision when viewing objects. As the condition worsens, these symptoms may intensify, and some patients may additionally develop dry eyes, excessive tearing, photophobia, ocular itching, or a sensation of soreness and heaviness in the eyes.
2. Gastrointestinal Symptoms
If left untreated, eye fatigue may progress to cause gastrointestinal symptoms, including nausea and vomiting.
3. Neurological Symptoms
Since eye fatigue can be triggered by psychological factors, patients may experience worsening mental symptoms as the condition advances—such as lethargy, irritability, and anxiety. Some individuals may also develop dizziness or headache.
Patients are advised to adopt healthier visual habits in daily life and consider pharmacological interventions—for example, artificial tears—to alleviate symptoms such as dryness and fatigue.
