Can I eat before an endocrine examination?

Introduction
For endocrine testing: - Fasting blood glucose measurement requires fasting (no food intake) to avoid interfering with test results. - Two-hour postprandial blood glucose testing must be performed after a meal. - Thyroid function tests can be conducted either in a fasting or non-fasting state, as fasting generally has minimal impact on the results. - Adrenal cortical rhythm assessment requires fasting blood collection; therefore, food intake is not permitted.

Whether fasting is required for endocrine testing depends on the specific purpose of the test—for example, fasting blood glucose, 2-hour postprandial blood glucose, thyroid function tests, and circadian cortisol rhythm assessment.

1. Fasting Blood Glucose

Fasting blood glucose testing typically requires abstaining from food for at least eight hours prior to the test; therefore, patients must not eat before the test to avoid compromising result accuracy.

2. 2-Hour Postprandial Blood Glucose

The 2-hour postprandial blood glucose test measures blood glucose exactly two hours after the start of a meal; thus, the patient must eat before this test can be performed.

3. Thyroid Function Tests

Thyroid function tests may be conducted either in a fasting or non-fasting state, as fasting generally has minimal impact on test results. Patients may therefore choose based on personal preference or convenience.

4. Circadian Cortisol Rhythm Assessment

For circadian cortisol rhythm assessment, blood samples are typically drawn while fasting, and again at 5:00 PM and midnight. Fasting blood collection requires abstention from food; eating beforehand may compromise the accuracy of the test results.
