Introduction
Chinese chive seeds are relatively warming in nature. Long-term and excessive consumption may lead to hyperactivity of yang and potentially impair liver and kidney functions. Additionally, patients with yin deficiency and excessive internal heat or damp-heat conditions should avoid consuming them to prevent worsening of symptoms. It is also not recommended to eat Chinese chive seeds together with duck meat, as duck meat is cooling in nature while the seeds are heating; combining them may affect their therapeutic effects.

Side effects of Chinese chive seeds (Allium tuberosum seeds) may include yin deficiency with internal heat (“deficient fire”) and potential impairment of liver and kidney function. Patients with excessive internal heat due to yin deficiency should avoid them, and concurrent consumption with cold- or cool-natured foods should also be avoided.

Chinese chive seeds are a traditional Chinese medicinal herb known for their ability to warm the kidneys and tonify yang. They also help lower blood lipid levels and promote intestinal lubrication and bowel movement. Clinically, they are commonly used to treat symptoms arising from kidney-yang deficiency—such as epigastric coldness and cold limbs, seminal emission or enuresis, lower abdominal cold pain, impotence, and premature ejaculation. However, because chive seeds possess a notably warm and heating nature, prolonged or excessive intake may lead to hyperactivity of yang (yang excess) and potentially impair liver and kidney function. Moreover, patients with yin deficiency and internal heat or damp-heat patterns are generally advised against using chive seeds, as this may exacerbate their symptoms. Concurrent consumption with duck meat is also discouraged: duck meat is considered “cold” in nature, whereas chive seeds are “hot”; combining them may interfere with the herb’s therapeutic efficacy.

In addition, patients with yang deficiency must use chive seeds only under the guidance of a qualified healthcare provider. Appropriate dosage control is essential—not only to achieve therapeutic benefit but also to prevent toxicity or adverse reactions.
