How is hypopituitarism treated?

Introduction
In cases of hypopituitarism leading to insufficient thyroid hormone secretion, thyroid hormone replacement therapy can be used. If there is inadequate adrenal corticosteroid secretion, corticosteroid replacement is required. For gonadal dysfunction, estrogen and progesterone can be administered in women, while testosterone or similar androgens can be used in men. When the condition is caused by a pituitary tumor, surgical removal of the tumor is necessary to restore pituitary function.

Hypopituitarism can be managed with hormone replacement therapy and etiology-specific treatment.

  1. Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hypopituitarism leads to hypofunction of the thyroid gland, adrenal glands, and gonads. Upon diagnosis of pituitary insufficiency, patients should undergo comprehensive endocrine evaluation at a hospital to assess the secretory function of each target gland. If thyroid hormone deficiency is identified, levothyroxine tablets may be prescribed under physician supervision for replacement therapy. In cases of adrenal corticosteroid deficiency, hydrocortisone or other glucocorticoid replacement therapy is required. For gonadal dysfunction, females may receive estrogen and/or progestogen replacement—for example, progesterone capsules or estradiol valerate tablets. Women desiring fertility may be prescribed ovulation-inducing agents such as clomiphene citrate tablets. Males may receive testosterone replacement therapy—for instance, testosterone undecanoate capsules.

  2. Etiology-Specific Treatment

If hypopituitarism results from a pituitary adenoma, surgical resection of the tumor at a hospital is necessary to restore pituitary function. If the condition stems from infection, antimicrobial therapy—such as ceftriaxone capsules or cefradine capsules—should be administered to treat the underlying infection and improve pituitary function.
