Introduction
After vision correction surgery, the main complications are as follows. First, since laser correction is performed on the cornea, some patients may experience corneal dysfunction or decompensation. For example, decreased night vision and night glare—patients may find it difficult to see clearly when going out at night, and during driving, point light sources ahead may appear as large halos, all of which are reactions due to compromised corneal integrity.

In recent years, equipment for laser vision correction surgery has advanced rapidly, with now femtosecond and semi-femtosecond lasers available, significantly improving surgical efficiency. What are the potential complications of laser vision correction for myopia?

Complications of Laser Vision Correction for Myopia

After laser vision correction, the main postoperative complications include the following. First, since the procedure involves reshaping the cornea, some patients may experience corneal functional decompensation. For example, night vision may deteriorate, causing symptoms such as night glare or halos. Patients might find it difficult to see clearly at night, and when driving, point light sources ahead may appear as large rings of light—these are reactions resulting from compromised corneal integrity. Second, dry eye syndrome is common after surgery. The procedure inevitably damages sensory nerve endings in the cornea and affects tear secretion function, making patients prone to postoperative dry eyes. Third, refractive regression is relatively common—meaning that months or even years after surgery (e.g., two or three years), nearsightedness may return, particularly among patients who were highly myopic before surgery.

Patients must be fully informed about these risks and carefully consider whether to undergo laser surgery. In rare cases, excimer laser correction can trigger corneal inflammatory reactions; severe inflammation may lead to corneal clouding or scarring, resulting in decreased vision.

Generally speaking, however, excimer laser surgery for myopia is a very safe procedure. Wishing you good health and happiness.
