People with AB blood type are relatively rare. This is because a child can only inherit AB blood type if one parent has type A and the other has type B, or if one parent has AB blood type and the other does not have type O.
Blood types are classified into four main groups: A, B, AB, and O. Type O blood is also one of these blood types and is neither inherently good nor bad. Type O red blood cells carry neither A nor B antigens on their surface and are commonly known as "universal donors" in lay terms. However, since type O plasma contains both anti-A and anti-B antibodies, it may cause varying degrees of red blood cell hemolysis in recipients. Therefore, type O blood cannot be freely transfused to everyone. Moreover, individuals with Rh-positive type O blood cannot receive Rh-negative blood of any type, and can only receive small amounts of Rh-positive blood from any group. On the other hand, people with type O blood cannot safely receive transfusions from other blood types, as this could easily trigger a hemolytic reaction.
