Introduction
Tonifies the Spleen and augments Qi; nourishes the Blood and tonifies the Heart; harmonizes the Spleen and Stomach. In this formula, Astragalus (Huangqi) and Codonopsis (Dangshen) tonify the Spleen and augment Qi; Angelica sinensis (Danggui) and Longan aril (Longyanrou) nourish the Blood and tonify the Heart. Atractylodes (Baizhu) and honey-fried Licorice (Zhigancao) assist Astragalus and Codonopsis in tonifying the Spleen and augmenting Qi; Jujube seed (Suanzaoren), Poria (Fuling), and Polygala (Yuanzhi) nourish the Blood, calm the Heart, and soothe the Shen (spirit). Costus root (Muxiang) regulates and moves Qi; Ginger (Shengjiang) and Jujube (Dazao) harmonize the Spleen and Stomach.

Gui Pi Wan is a commonly used traditional Chinese patent medicine. Its principal ingredients include Codonopsis root (Dang Shen), Atractylodes rhizome (Bai Zhu), Astragalus root (Huang Qi), Longan aril (Long Yan Rou), Zizyphus seed (Suan Zao Ren), Costus root (Mu Xiang), Chinese Angelica root (Dang Gui), Polygala root (Yuan Zhi), Licorice root (Gan Cao), Poria sclerotium (Fu Ling), Jujube fruit (Da Zao), and Fresh ginger (Sheng Jiang).

In this formula, Astragalus root (Huang Qi) and Codonopsis root (Dang Shen) tonify the Spleen and augment Qi; Chinese Angelica root (Dang Gui) and Longan aril (Long Yan Rou) nourish the Blood and support the Heart. Atractylodes rhizome (Bai Zhu) and honey-fried Licorice root (Zhi Gan Cao) synergistically enhance the Spleen-tonifying and Qi-augmenting effects of Astragalus and Codonopsis. Zizyphus seed (Suan Zao Ren), Poria (Fu Ling), and Polygala root (Yuan Zhi) nourish the Blood, calm the Heart, and anchor the Shen (spirit). Costus root (Mu Xiang) promotes the smooth flow of Qi and regulates Qi movement, while Fresh ginger (Sheng Jiang) and Jujube fruit (Da Zao) harmonize the Spleen and Stomach.

The primary therapeutic actions of Gui Pi Wan are to augment Qi and nourish Blood, strengthen the Spleen, and nourish the Heart. It is primarily indicated for conditions arising from deficiency of both Heart and Spleen or failure of the Spleen to control Blood, manifesting as palpitations, insomnia, forgetfulness, dizziness, headache, limb fatigue, general lassitude, poor appetite, and sallow complexion.

Clinically, Gui Pi Wan is also frequently employed in the treatment of neurasthenia, post-traumatic brain syndrome, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, duodenal ulcer, thrombocytopenic purpura, anemia, gastric ulcer, menopausal syndrome, menstrual disorders, amenorrhea, erectile dysfunction, and post-concussion syndrome.
