Introduction
Dry heaving after brushing teeth in the morning may be caused by gastroesophageal reflux pharyngitis or increased sensitivity of the pharyngeal reflex. If it is related to psychological factors, dry heaving after morning tooth brushing can also occur, which is one of the main causes. In patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease, changes in gastric motility allow stomach contents to flow back into the throat.

Morning vomiting can lead to chronic pharyngitis, early pregnancy, gastrointestinal dysfunction, and diseases of the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder. Morning dry heaving is a very common symptom, with many patients experiencing it upon waking, especially during tooth brushing. So, what causes dry heaving when brushing teeth in the morning?

What Causes Dry Heaving When Brushing Teeth in the Morning?

Dry heaving after brushing teeth in the morning may be caused by gastroesophageal reflux pharyngitis or by an overly sensitive gag reflex. Psychological and emotional factors can also contribute and are one of the main reasons. For patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), changes in gastric motility allow stomach contents to flow back into the throat, causing chronic congestion of the pharyngeal mucosa, which makes dry heaving more likely during tooth brushing. Generally, if dry heaving occurs when brushing teeth in the morning, one reason could be that the patient has a naturally sensitive gag reflex.

Another reason is chronic inflammation and irritation in the throat, which heightens the sensitivity of the gag reflex. If the cause is simply a sensitive reflex, no medication is usually needed. Simply avoiding aggressive brushing can significantly improve symptoms. However, if the cause is chronic inflammation or irritation, symptomatic treatment with traditional Chinese medicines such as Liyan Pills or Liyan Capsules may be appropriate. Additionally, maintaining good oral hygiene and avoiding spicy or irritating foods is recommended.

Dry heaving may also occur in the morning if the air is dusty or if the throat feels dry upon waking. In general, ensuring good indoor ventilation helps. If the air is particularly dry, using a humidifier as needed can relieve symptoms.
