Can you drink milk after a normal delivery?
After a normal delivery, women can drink milk in moderation, but excessive consumption is not recommended.
Following childbirth, due to blood loss and physical exertion, women often experience symptoms such as weakness and anemia. At the same time, their immune system may be weakened, making them more susceptible to bacterial or fungal infections. Milk contains abundant high-quality protein, which not only helps strengthen the immune system and prevent colds and fever, but also has a calming effect that promotes better sleep and emotional stability, thus supporting postpartum recovery. Therefore, it is appropriate for postpartum women to consume milk moderately after a vaginal delivery.
Milk can dilute gastric acid and normally helps protect the gastric mucosa. However, after delivery, gastrointestinal motility is reduced and digestive function declines. Drinking too much milk under these conditions may lead to bloating and indigestion; in severe cases, abdominal pain may occur. Women with conditions such as gastric ulcers or cholecystitis should avoid drinking milk altogether. Additionally, it is best to consume warm milk to prevent gastrointestinal discomfort from cold exposure, which could otherwise lead to diarrhea.
