How long after getting caught in the rain does fever develop?
Generally, if an adult is in good physical condition, getting caught in the rain usually does not lead to fever. However, elderly individuals or children with weaker immune systems may develop a fever within 1 to 3 days. The details are as follows:
1. No fever
In adults, exposure to rain typically does not cause fever. This is because adults generally have better physical health and stronger resistance. If they promptly wipe their body with a dry towel after getting wet, fever is unlikely to occur. However, if symptoms such as coughing or sore throat appear after getting caught in the rain, it is recommended to drink warm water and keep the body warm.
2. Fever within 1–3 days
Elderly people or children with lower immunity are more susceptible to catching a chill, which can easily lead to fever. If body temperature exceeds 38.5°C, medications such as ibuprofen suspension or acetaminophen tablets may be taken under medical guidance. Intravenous fluid therapy may be necessary if required.
After getting caught in the rain, individuals should pay attention to staying warm, take a hot shower, and drink ginger sugar water. Under medical guidance, local heat application to acupoints on the back—such as Dazhui (GV14) and Fengmen (BL12)—may help enhance the body's immunity.
