Can leukopenia cause inflammation?
Leukopenia can lead to inflammation.
Leukopenia may cause acute tracheobronchitis, upper respiratory tract infections, acute laryngitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and other conditions. White blood cells mainly include eosinophils, basophils, monocytes, and lymphocytes. White blood cells primarily defend against foreign pathogens through phagocytosis, destroying bacteria and viruses that invade the body. They also produce immune responses via lymphocytes, which either destroy invading pathogens or render them inactive. Additionally, white blood cells secrete various cytokines that regulate inflammation and immune function. When resistance to pathogenic bacteria, viruses, parasites, and other exogenous pathogens is reduced due to low white blood cell counts, the body becomes more susceptible to infections.
Furthermore, individuals with leukopenia may experience symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, and decreased appetite even in the absence of infection. It is important to promptly identify the underlying cause of leukopenia and initiate appropriate treatment.
