Is sleeping on a hard bed helpful for kyphosis?
Some cases of kyphosis may benefit from sleeping on a hard mattress, while for others it may not be very effective. Specifically:
For general patients, sleeping on a hard mattress can provide some corrective therapeutic effect. However, for kyphosis caused by ankylosing spondylitis, the effect is usually insignificant. If kyphosis results from poor posture, rickets, malnutrition, or congenital developmental issues, sleeping on a hard mattress may help correct the condition to some extent and improve symptoms. In contrast, patients with ankylosing spondylitis typically experience little therapeutic benefit from sleeping on a hard mattress.
Patients with kyphosis should pay attention to keeping the spinal joints warm to avoid impairing local blood circulation, which could worsen the curvature. Regular proper functional exercises for the spine—such as lumbar bridge exercises and planks—can strengthen the muscles around the spine and help slow the progression of kyphosis.
