Why does my nose hurt when touched?
Generally, pain upon touching the nose may be caused by physiological factors, internal heat ("shang huo"), inflammation, trauma, or mucosal dryness. A detailed analysis is as follows:
1. Physiological Factors
Frequently picking the nose forcefully can damage the nasal mucosa, leading to nasal pain. It is recommended to avoid aggressive nose picking or forceful nose blowing in daily life.
2. Internal Heat ("Shang Huo")
Regular consumption of spicy foods, insufficient water intake, and exposure to a dry environment may lead to "internal heat," causing dryness and crusting inside the nasal cavity. It is advisable to drink more water and, as directed by a physician, use saline solution to rinse the nasal passages.
3. Inflammation
In cases of chronic rhinitis, local inflammation can cause swelling and congestion, resulting in the aforementioned symptoms. Treatment under medical guidance with medications such as budesonide or fluticasone propionate is recommended.
4. Trauma
After a strong external impact, tissues inside the nose may be injured, or even fractured, causing nasal pain. It is recommended to seek prompt medical evaluation at a hospital to determine the exact condition and receive appropriate treatment based on individual circumstances.
5. Mucosal Dryness
Prolonged exposure to excessively dry environments can dehydrate and dry out the nasal mucosa, potentially rupturing capillaries on the right side and leading to nosebleeds. If no other discomfort is present, specific treatment is usually unnecessary. Adjusting the temperature and humidity of the living environment, drinking sufficient water, and minimizing exposure of the nose to cold wind are recommended.
In addition, conditions such as nasal vestibulitis or sinusitis may also cause pain when the nose is touched; therefore, targeted treatment addressing the underlying cause is advised.
