What causes a painful nose and runny nose?
Nasal pain and runny nose may be caused by conditions such as the common cold, rhinitis, or sinusitis.
1. Common Cold
The common cold is a type of upper respiratory inflammatory disease associated with exposure to cold temperatures or viral infections. Inflammation in the respiratory tract can irritate the nasal mucosa, leading to a runny nose. In severe cases, this may cause congestion, redness, and swelling of the nasal mucosa, resulting in pain.
2. Rhinitis
Conditions such as chronic rhinitis or allergic rhinitis involve repeated inflammation of the nasal passages, which often leads to noticeable congestion and increased secretions, causing the aforementioned symptoms. Additional symptoms may include frequent sneezing and nasal congestion, which can contribute to nasal pain.
3. Sinusitis
Sinusitis often develops when acute or chronic rhinitis, deviated septum, or similar conditions are not effectively controlled. This can lead to symptoms such as nasal congestion and discharge. Prolonged irritation of the nasal mucosa may result in disease progression and even cause nosebleeds.
Nasal pain and runny nose may also be due to factors such as nasal tumors or foreign bodies. It is recommended to visit a hospital for appropriate diagnostic evaluations followed by corresponding treatment and management.
