Introduction
Complications of trachoma include entropion and trichiasis, ptosis, symblepharon, and corneal opacity. Trachomatous damage to the tarsal plate leads to tarsal thickening and deformation, resulting in entropion and trichiasis. Trachoma-induced thickening of the conjunctiva and tarsal plate can cause ptosis. Scarring and contraction of the conjunctiva due to trachoma shorten the tissue, leading to symblepharon. Chlamydia trachomatis causes epithelial keratitis, which results in corneal opacity.

Complications of trachoma include entropion and trichiasis, ptosis of the upper eyelid, symblepharon, corneal opacity, etc.

1. Entropion and trichiasis: If not treated promptly and effectively, trachoma damages the tarsal plate, causing thickening and deformation of the tarsus, along with scarring and contraction of the conjunctiva, leading to entropion and trichiasis.

2. Ptosis of the upper eyelid: Trachoma causes thickening of the conjunctiva and tarsal plate, increasing the weight of the eyelid, which damages the muscles and weakens the function of eyelid elevation, resulting in ptosis.

3. Symblepharon: Scarring and contraction of the conjunctiva caused by trachoma shorten the palpebral conjunctiva, leading to symblepharon.

4. Corneal opacity: Chlamydia trachomatis causes epithelial keratitis, forming corneal pannus; additionally, trichiasis irritates the cornea, contributing to corneal opacity.

In addition, if trachoma is not treated promptly and effectively, it may also lead to parenchymatous conjunctival xerosis, chronic dacryocystitis, and even blindness, thus requiring active treatment.
