What causes palpitations when working night shifts?
Palpitations during night shifts may be caused by long-term sleep deprivation, insufficient cerebral blood supply, myocardial ischemia, etc.
1. Long-term sleep deprivation
Chronic lack of sleep or staying up late can increase sympathetic nervous system activity and elevate catecholamine secretion, leading to increased heart rate, blood vessel constriction, and elevated blood pressure. Symptoms usually improve by correcting sleep habits, avoiding late nights, and ensuring sufficient sleep.
2. Insufficient cerebral blood supply
Inadequate blood flow to the brain is often related to impaired cerebral arterial circulation. Factors such as obesity, smoking, and cervical spondylosis may trigger this condition. Symptoms include dizziness, blurred vision, and limb weakness. It may also manifest as cardiac discomfort or palpitations after staying up late. Treatment may include medications such as rivaroxaban tablets or enteric-coated aspirin tablets, under a doctor's guidance.
3. Myocardial ischemia
Myocardial ischemia is primarily caused by conditions such as coronary atherosclerotic heart disease, tachycardia, smoking, obesity, and emotional stress. Common symptoms include shortness of breath and chest pain. It may also lead to heart discomfort or palpitations after熬夜 (staying up late). Treatment may involve oral medications such as metoprolol tartrate tablets or clopidogrel hydrogen sulfate tablets, as directed by a physician.
Palpitations during night shifts could also be due to hyperthyroidism. Patients are advised to maintain regular daily routines and ensure adequate sleep.
