What temperature is considered a low-grade fever in infants?
Low fever, also known as low-grade fever, is generally defined as a body temperature between 37.5°C and 38.2°C in infants, depending on the method of measurement.
Temperature in infants can be measured orally, rectally, or under the armpit (axillary). Normal oral temperature ranges from 36.2°C to 37.2°C, rectal temperature is approximately 36.5°C to 37.5°C, and axillary temperature ranges from 37°C to 38°C. Low fever falls between normal body temperature and high fever; in infants, a temperature of 37.5°C to 38.2°C is typically considered low-grade fever. A temperature exceeding 39°C is generally classified as high fever.
When an infant has a low fever, it's important to identify and treat the underlying cause. If the fever is due to environmental factors or vigorous physical activity, lifestyle adjustments may suffice. However, if the fever results from pathological conditions such as hyperthyroidism, upper respiratory tract infection, or lupus erythematosus, prompt medical evaluation at a hospital is necessary.
