Introduction
Acute pharyngitis is an acute inflammatory disease involving the pharyngeal mucosa, submucosal tissues, and pharyngeal lymphoid tissue. It may be primary or secondary in nature. Factors such as decreased systemic resistance, fatigue, excessive smoking or alcohol consumption, spicy or irritating foods, "heatiness" (a traditional concept referring to internal heat), common colds, and exposure to dust, smoke, or irritating gases can all trigger episodes of acute pharyngitis.

In daily life, many people suffer from pharyngitis, which seriously affects their everyday activities and causes various throat problems. Acute pharyngitis is one type of pharyngitis. So, what causes acute pharyngitis?

What Causes Acute Pharyngitis?

Acute pharyngitis is an inflammatory disease affecting the pharyngeal mucosa and often involving the pharyngeal lymphoid tissue. It can be either primary or secondary. A decline in general resistance, fatigue, excessive smoking or alcohol consumption, spicy or irritating foods, heatiness (internal heat), colds, and exposure to dust or smoke can all trigger acute pharyngitis. Gastroesophageal reflux, as well as food or drug allergies, may also induce this condition. Additionally, acute pharyngitis may occur secondarily to acute tonsillitis, acute rhinitis, or acute sinusitis.

Common symptoms include sore throat, pharyngeal edema, difficulty swallowing, and even respiratory failure. Related pharyngeal symptoms may develop, and in more severe cases, patients may develop pharyngeal abscesses or fever. Treatment typically begins with a visit to an otolaryngology clinic for evaluation via indirect laryngoscopy, complete blood count, and assessment of the severity and type of inflammation. If the inflammation is caused by an acute bacterial infection, antibiotics may be considered—commonly cephalosporins or penicillins—often combined with nebulized therapy.

Individuals suffering from pharyngitis should pay close attention to self-care in daily life, strengthen their resistance and immunity, and avoid worsening of the condition that could affect normal living. We hope this information has been helpful. Wishing you good health and a happy life!
