Can expired steam eye masks be used?
It is generally not recommended to use expired steam eye masks.
Steam eye masks work through a rapid oxidation reaction of iron powder with oxygen, which generates heat during the process. These masks are designed to relieve eye fatigue, dry eye, and similar symptoms by applying localized heat to the eyes. The heat provides a physical warming effect that promotes secretion of meibomian gland oil and improves conjunctival congestion, making them widely used in clinical practice. After expiration, the heat-generating components in the mask may have degraded, leading to unstable temperatures during use. Excessively high temperatures could burn the delicate skin around the eyes, while insufficient heat may fail to achieve the desired warm compress effect. Additionally, the liquid responsible for producing steam may deteriorate or become contaminated over time. Using an expired steam eye mask could therefore introduce contaminants to the eye area, potentially causing infections such as conjunctivitis or keratitis.
Patients should avoid using expired steam eye masks. As a temporary alternative, applying a warm towel compress to the eyes can provide a similar therapeutic effect.
