Four Characteristics of Viral Fever in Young Children
There are no specific four characteristics for viral fever in young children, as the features of viral fever depend on the type of virus involved. Generally, treatments may include general supportive care and medication.
1. Common viruses
If fever is caused by common viruses, it usually presents as low-grade or moderate fever without other significant discomfort, and tends to be self-limiting. With appropriate physical cooling measures, giving the child plenty of warm water to maintain hydration, recovery is typically rapid.
2. Cold viruses (common cold viruses)
If fever results from cold viruses, high fever often occurs, with body temperature exceeding 39°C, accompanied by symptoms such as chills and shivering. In such cases, medications like acetaminophen oral solution or ibuprofen suspension may be used under medical guidance.
3. Epstein-Barr (EB) virus
If fever is caused by EB virus infection, the fever may last longer and recur, potentially extending the illness duration to 7–10 days. When these symptoms occur, antiviral medications such as ribavirin granules or acyclovir tablets may be taken under a doctor's supervision.
In addition, Coxsackie virus may also cause fever, along with symptoms like sore throat, fatigue, and vomiting. Treatment may involve immunoglobulin therapy as directed by a physician.
