Is acupuncture effective for stiff neck?
In general, acupuncture can be used to treat stiff neck (also known as "waking up with a cricked neck"). Under a doctor's guidance and when administered in regular treatment courses, acupuncture can effectively relieve localized pain and reduce shoulder and neck tension. Regular acupuncture sessions may delay disease progression and achieve favorable therapeutic results.
Stiff neck commonly occurs in young and middle-aged men and is categorized as a type of limb impediment disorder caused by improper sleeping posture. It typically manifests as pain, soreness, and limited mobility in one side of the neck upon waking. Acupuncture is generally suitable for this condition, as it helps alleviate neck pain, promotes recovery, and has minimal side effects. Commonly used acupuncture points for treating stiff neck include Houxi (SI3), Ashi points, Xuanzhong (GB39), and Wailaogong (Ex-UE8). Stimulating Houxi and Xuanzhong helps regulate yang energy and promote blood and qi circulation; needling Ashi points helps unblock stagnated energy at local tender spots, promoting blood circulation and resolving stasis; and stimulating Wailaogong helps activate blood flow, unblock meridians, and relieve muscle spasms and pain.
Given that acupuncture inherently promotes qi and blood circulation and alleviates pain by removing blood stasis, it can significantly relieve symptoms of stiff neck within one or two treatment sessions. It is important to note, however, that acupuncture must be performed only by qualified professionals. Self-treatment should be avoided to prevent potential adverse effects.
