Introduction
When pneumonia occurs, pulmonary ventilation and gas exchange functions are reduced, leading to respiratory failure. In emphysema, residual lung volume significantly increases, gas exchange decreases, resulting in dynamic pulmonary hyperinflation and subsequent decline in lung function causing the aforementioned conditions. Tuberculosis can destroy large areas of lung tissue, impairing either ventilation or gas exchange function, thus leading to such complications.

The most common causes of respiratory failure include pneumonia, emphysema, and tuberculosis.

1. Pneumonia

When a person has pneumonia, the bronchial mucosa becomes congested and edematous. Additionally, accumulation of secretions further narrows the already constricted airways, impairing both ventilation and gas exchange functions of the lungs, which may lead to respiratory failure.

2. Emphysema

In emphysema, residual lung volume significantly increases and gas exchange is reduced, leading to dynamic hyperinflation of the lungs. This results in decreased lung function and can cause the aforementioned condition.

3. Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis can cause extensive destruction of lung tissue, impairing either the lung's ventilation or gas exchange capacity, thereby resulting in respiratory failure.

In addition, respiratory failure may also be caused by conditions such as tracheal tumors. It is recommended to seek timely medical evaluation at a hospital to determine the exact underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment accordingly.
