What causes the feeling of being unable to catch one's breath mentally?
Feeling short of breath may result from physiological factors, or it could be caused by pathological conditions such as bronchitis or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
I. Physiological Causes
When under prolonged mental stress, anxiety, or tension, autonomic nervous system dysfunction may occur, leading to breathing difficulties and a sensation of being unable to catch one's breath. It is recommended to rest in bed more often, avoid excessive fatigue, maintain a light diet, avoid spicy or irritating foods, and increase fluid intake.
II. Pathological Causes
1. Bronchitis
Bronchitis is an acute or chronic nonspecific inflammation caused by microbial infections, physical or chemical irritation, and is characterized by symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and sputum production. Patients may take medications such as amoxicillin capsules, cefixime capsules, or penicillin V potassium tablets under medical supervision.
2. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
During flare-ups, obstructive impairment of lung ventilation function can occur. Due to diffuse obstruction of the small airways, patients experience difficulty breathing and feel short of breath. Treatment may include bronchodilators and anti-inflammatory medications prescribed by a doctor, such as roxithromycin capsules or azithromycin tablets.
In addition, myocardial ischemia can also cause a sensation of breathlessness. It is advisable to seek medical attention at a hospital to determine the underlying cause and receive targeted treatment.
