Who is suitable for the 23-valent pneumococcal vaccine?
The 23-valent pneumococcal vaccine, commonly known as the 23-valent pneumonia vaccine, is generally suitable for individuals aged 2 years and older who are at increased risk of pneumococcal infection.
It is recommended for people aged 2 years and above who face a higher risk of pneumococcal infection, such as the elderly, young children, and those with chronic cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, individuals with chronic liver disease, alcohol intoxication, or impaired immune function should also consider receiving this vaccine based on medical advice to prevent pneumococcal infection. Usually, a single dose is sufficient; however, for individuals at high risk of severe pneumococcal infection or those whose antibody levels decline rapidly after the initial vaccination, a second dose may be administered.
Vaccination should be postponed if the individual has a known allergy to any component of the vaccine, significant cardiopulmonary dysfunction, or is experiencing an acute exacerbation of a respiratory illness.
