Introduction
Women trying to conceive can generally take metformin without adverse effects. Metformin is a medication used to treat diabetes that promotes glucose utilization in peripheral tissues and lowers blood glucose levels. The drug has a relatively short half-life, and after taking a dose, it is typically eliminated from the body within a few days. Therefore, women usually only need to discontinue the medication for several days before conception.

Generally, taking metformin while preparing for pregnancy does not have adverse effects on women. The detailed analysis is as follows:

Metformin is a medication used to treat diabetes. It promotes glucose utilization in peripheral tissues and lowers blood sugar levels. The drug has a relatively short half-life, and after a single dose, it is typically completely eliminated from the body within a few days. Therefore, discontinuing the medication a few days before conception is usually sufficient.

In the United States, pregnant diabetic patients who cannot use insulin for blood glucose control may continue taking metformin during pregnancy. However, current diabetes treatment guidelines in China do not recommend the use of metformin during pregnancy. Hence, it is advised that pregnant women discontinue metformin and switch to insulin therapy upon becoming pregnant. Diabetic patients planning pregnancy should undergo comprehensive medical evaluations. If there are no severe diabetic retinopathy or advanced diabetic nephropathy, pregnancy can be considered safe.

It is recommended to consult a doctor at a hospital first, receive a clear diagnosis, and then proceed with appropriate treatment. In daily life, avoid high-sugar and high-fat foods as much as possible, eat smaller meals more frequently, and control total food intake.
