Causes of dark circles under the eyes
Causes of dark circles can be divided into two categories: non-medical factors and medical conditions. Common medical causes include contact dermatitis, eyelid eczema, and malnutrition.
I. Non-medical factors
Dark circles may result from frequent late nights or prolonged use of electronic devices such as smartphones and computers, leading to eye fatigue and congestion around the eyes. Inadequate sun protection during outdoor activities may also cause local pigmentation.
II. Medical factors
1. Contact Dermatitis
Using skincare products or cosmetics around the eyes may irritate the eyelids, causing localized contact dermatitis and subsequent pigmentation.
2. Eyelid Eczema
Poor-quality cosmetics, or underlying conditions such as chronic conjunctivitis or dacryocystitis, may lead to irritation of the skin around the eyes by tears or secretions, resulting in eyelid eczema. Itching prompts frequent scratching and rubbing, causing rough, flaky skin and dull discoloration around the eyes.
3. Malnutrition
Picky eating habits may lead to nutritional deficiencies. Without adequate nourishment, the skin becomes coarse and loose, contributing to sagging around the eyes or pigmentation.
In addition to the above, conditions such as aplastic anemia may also cause dark circles. Timely differential diagnosis is recommended.
