Itchy upper eyelid
Both physiological and pathological factors can cause itching of the upper eyelid. Pathological factors are often associated with conditions such as eyelid eczema and blepharitis.
I. Physiological Factors
When the body experiences stress, lack of sleep, or foreign objects entering the eye, the sympathetic nerve plexus in the upper eyelid area may become hypersensitive, leading to discomfort such as itching, fullness, and stabbing pain. Affected individuals can quickly relieve or eliminate these symptoms by removing the underlying triggers.
II. Pathological Factors
1. Eyelid Eczema
This condition can be triggered by various factors including infection, allergies, and climate changes. When the skin of the upper eyelid is affected, it may lead to involuntary itching, polymorphic rashes, and moist eyes. Patients may follow medical advice to use medications such as tobramycin dexamethasone ophthalmic ointment, prednisolone acetate tablets, or epinastine hydrochloride capsules for treatment and symptom improvement.
2. Blepharitis
This disease affects multiple tissues including the eyelid margin, hair follicles, and glands. Inflammation in these tissues can cause discomfort in the upper eyelid area, such as itching, pain, and swelling.
However, other conditions such as eyelid hemangioma or squamous cell carcinoma cannot be ruled out. Patients should seek medical evaluation for proper diagnosis and exclusion of these diseases.
