How long does it take for eyelashes to grow back after being burned off?
Eyelashes are commonly referred to as cilia. Normally, new eyelashes will regrow within about three months after being burned off. However, if the hair follicles have been damaged or necrotized, new eyelashes typically will not grow back.
If the hair follicles were not damaged during the burn, applying vitamin E to the base of the eyelashes as directed by a physician usually promotes growth of approximately one millimeter per week, with complete regrowth of new eyelashes occurring in about three months.
For patients whose skin and hair follicles have been severely burned and rendered nonviable, eyelash regrowth is no longer possible. In such cases, prompt medical consultation is recommended. Under medical guidance, hair follicle transplantation at the affected site can be performed to restore eyelash growth. It generally takes 3 to 6 months from transplantation until new eyelashes fully grow in.
