Will a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) recur after resection?
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) may recur after resection.
GISTs are mesenchymal tumors originating in the gastrointestinal tract, most commonly occurring in the stomach and small intestine. Surgical removal remains a key treatment approach, but there is still a certain risk of recurrence after resection. According to the risk stratification for GISTs, patients with high-risk tumors have a relatively higher postoperative recurrence rate, estimated at approximately 50% to 90%.
After GIST resection, patients should undergo regular follow-up examinations to monitor disease status. This allows early detection of any recurrence and timely targeted intervention. After surgery, if the patient's condition permits, light ambulation is appropriate, but strenuous physical activity should be avoided.
