The classification principle of ABO blood groups is usually based on the antigens present on the surface of red blood cells.
Blood types are generally divided into four categories: type A, type B, type O, and type AB. If A antigens are present on the red blood cell surface, it typically indicates blood type A, which usually contains anti-B antibodies in the plasma. In contrast, type B blood carries B antigens but contains anti-A antibodies in the serum. Blood lacking both A and B antigens on the red blood cells is classified as type O. Individuals with type AB blood have both A and B antigens on their red blood cells.
During blood transfusions, blood testing is typically required. Because different blood types carry distinct antigens, mixing incompatible types can trigger an immune response, leading to clotting and potentially harming health. Transfusing identical blood types generally does not cause adverse reactions. Notably, type O blood lacks both A and B antigens, making it compatible with all other blood types without causing adverse reactions, thus serving as a universal donor.
