What does a nitrite positive 1+ mean?
A positive nitrite result of 1+ indicates that nitrite has been detected in the urine test, with a mildly positive concentration, denoted as 1+.
Nitrite is a bacterial metabolic byproduct and is usually associated with bacterial infections. In urinalysis, a positive nitrite test often suggests a possible urinary tract infection (UTI), such as cystitis or pyelonephritis. However, a positive nitrite result may also result from other factors, such as prolonged urine retention or the use of certain medications. Therefore, if nitrite is detected as positive, further comprehensive evaluation combining other test results and the patient's clinical symptoms is necessary to confirm the presence of a urinary tract infection and determine appropriate treatment.
However, a negative nitrite test does not completely rule out infection. It may occur because the infection is caused by bacteria that are unable to reduce nitrates, thus not producing detectable nitrites. It could also be due to insufficient dwell time of urine in the bladder—less than four hours. If a routine urinalysis yields an abnormal result, repeat testing is recommended.
