What is Paget's disease of bone?
Rickets is a bone disorder caused by vitamin D deficiency, primarily characterized by skeletal deformities and bone softening.
Rickets mainly occurs in children and adolescents. Due to insufficient vitamin D, bone development is impaired, leading to skeletal deformities and softened bones. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for bone formation in the human body, promoting the absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphorus, and maintaining normal bone growth and development. Common symptoms include bowed legs, protruding chest bone (pectus carinatum), and spinal curvature (scoliosis). In severe cases, it may lead to physical disability or even death.
The primary cause of rickets is vitamin D deficiency, which may result from unbalanced diet, inadequate sun exposure, or abnormal liver or kidney function. Prevention and treatment strategies include increasing vitamin D intake and enhancing sunlight exposure. In more severe cases, vitamin D supplementation under medical supervision may be necessary.
In daily life, one should maintain a balanced diet, consume more fresh vegetables and fruits, and avoid greasy, spicy, and irritating foods.
