Introduction
Whether ascites in liver disease can be drained depends on the amount of ascitic fluid. If the hepatic ascites is not severe and the volume is small, and the nature of the fluid has been clearly diagnosed, paracentesis is usually not recommended; instead, treatment should target the underlying cause. However, if the ascites volume is large and causes significant abdominal distension or symptoms such as dyspnea and fever, paracentesis may be performed under a doctor's guidance.

In general, whether ascites can be drained in cases of hepatic ascites depends on the amount of fluid accumulated. If the volume of ascitic fluid is small, drainage is usually not recommended; conversely, if the volume is large, drainage may be appropriate. The detailed analysis is as follows:

1. Not recommended

Hepatic ascites typically results from liver disease causing fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity. If the ascites is mild and the volume is small, with a clear diagnosis of fluid characteristics, paracentesis (fluid drainage) is generally not recommended. Instead, once the underlying cause is identified, treatment should target the root cause. Diuretics may also be used under medical supervision to promote the elimination of ascitic fluid.

2. Recommended

If the volume of ascites is large and the patient experiences significant abdominal distension, or symptoms such as shortness of breath, dyspnea, abdominal pain, or fever, paracentesis can usually be performed under medical guidance. Treatment should also address the primary disease to prevent worsening of the condition, reduce the burden on the liver, and avoid further liver damage.

When hepatic ascites occurs, it is advisable to actively cooperate with medical treatment and maintain a light diet to support recovery.
