Introduction
After pregnancy, increased levels of estrogen and progesterone in women lead to enhanced shedding of vaginal cells and increased mucus secretion from cervical glands, resulting in an increase in vaginal discharge. If pregnant women have poor hygiene habits, they are more susceptible to pathogenic bacterial infections that may trigger vaginitis, or they may already have cervicitis prior to pregnancy. Under the influence of elevated estrogen during pregnancy, pre-existing cervical inflammation may worsen, leading to increased vaginal discharge.

The following refers to the vagina. Increased vaginal discharge during pregnancy may be a normal physiological phenomenon, but it could also indicate pathological conditions such as vaginitis or cervicitis. It is important to maintain good hygiene and seek medical evaluation and treatment promptly if any discomfort occurs.

I. Physiological Causes

During pregnancy, elevated levels of estrogen and progesterone lead to increased shedding of vaginal cells and greater mucus secretion from cervical glands, resulting in an increase in vaginal discharge.

II. Pathological Causes

1. Vaginitis

Hormonal changes during pregnancy increase vaginal discharge, while the pregnant woman's immune system is relatively weakened. Poor hygiene habits may allow pathogenic bacteria to invade and trigger vaginal infections, leading to increased discharge that is often accompanied by odor and itching. Treatment should be based on routine vaginal discharge tests and carried out under medical guidance using topical medications such as Honghe Fuyan Wash or Nystatin tablets.

2. Cervicitis

Pregnant women who already have cervicitis may experience worsening of inflammation due to the effects of estrogen during pregnancy, resulting in increased vaginal discharge. Symptoms may include odor and contact bleeding. Generally, definitive treatment is recommended after delivery; however, maintaining proper hygiene during pregnancy is essential.

In addition, increased discharge may also result from other conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease. Pregnant women experiencing increased discharge should frequently clean the genital area, avoid spicy or irritating foods, and actively undergo routine vaginal discharge testing and gynecological examinations to guide appropriate treatment.
