Why is there an odor after sitting for a long time?
Sitting for long periods may cause an unpleasant odor in the genital area, which could be due to physiological reasons or pathological conditions such as vaginitis, cervicitis, etc.
I. Physiological Causes
If the surrounding environment is excessively hot or if one remains seated without moving for prolonged periods, localized sweat accumulation may occur and lead to odor. This is particularly noticeable during menstruation in women. Generally, this is considered a normal physiological phenomenon that does not require special treatment—ensuring adequate ventilation is sufficient.
II. Pathological Causes
1. Vaginitis
Vaginitis occurs when imbalances in the body's microbial flora or hormonal disorders allow pathogenic bacteria to invade. Under inflammatory stimulation, the vagina produces abnormal secretions, which may develop an odor due to the presence of pathogens. Prolonged sitting can cause these secretions to accumulate locally, resulting in noticeable odor. Patients are generally advised to maintain good local hygiene and use medications such as metronidazole gel, erythromycin gel, or Bofukang suppositories as directed by a physician.
2. Cervicitis
Cervicitis often results from poor local hygiene over time or from upward spread of vaginal inflammation, leading to cervical irritation and inflammation. Inflammatory stimulation may increase vaginal discharge (leukorrhea). Sitting for extended periods causes this discharge to accumulate locally, producing an odor. Management typically includes regular underwear changes and using medications such as Jinguanteng capsules, Xiaomi vaginal effervescent tablets, or compound metronidazole suppositories as prescribed.
Besides the above causes, endometritis may also lead to this symptom. Patients are advised to seek timely medical attention and receive treatment under a doctor’s guidance.
