Causes of bleeding during the second trimester of pregnancy
Mid-trimester bleeding may be caused by conditions such as placenta previa, cervical polyps, or threatened miscarriage. The details are as follows:
1. Placenta Previa
If a pregnant woman has placenta previa, the placenta is located close to the cervical opening. As gestational age increases, abnormal dilation of the cervix may occur, causing surrounding soft tissues to stretch excessively and leading to rupture of capillaries, which could result in mid-trimester bleeding. It is recommended to seek hospital care for fetal preservation treatment. Sexual intercourse should be avoided, and prolonged bed rest is required.
2. Cervical Polyps
If a woman had cervical polyps before pregnancy, sexual activity during the second trimester may irritate the polyp, causing surface damage and subsequent bleeding. It is advisable to remove the polyp surgically to prevent potential malignant changes.
3. Threatened Miscarriage
If a pregnant woman experiences severe infection or abdominal trauma during the second trimester, frequent uterine contractions may occur, leading to partial detachment of embryonic tissue and creating wounds in the endometrium, resulting in the aforementioned symptoms. Treatment under medical supervision may include medications such as dydrogesterone tablets or sodium penicillin for injection. If treatment proves ineffective, termination of pregnancy may need to be considered.
In addition, this condition could also be caused by cervical precancerous lesions. Therefore, if such bleeding occurs, immediate medical evaluation at a hospital is essential, and delaying treatment should be avoided.
