Introduction
Ingrown nails may result from improper nail trimming, ingrown nail syndrome, or paronychia, and can be treated through general care or medication. If a patient cuts the nail too deeply or too short, sharp corners may form at the edges of the nail plate, causing the nail to pierce into the surrounding soft tissue like a spike, leading to the condition of inward-growing nails.

Ingrown toenails may result from improper nail trimming, ingrown nail syndrome (onychocryptosis), or paronychia. These conditions can be treated through general care or medication. Specific details are as follows:

1. Improper Nail Trimming

If a person cuts the nail too deeply or too short, sharp corners may form at the edges of the nail plate, causing it to pierce into the soft tissue surrounding the nail like a splinter, leading to inward nail growth. It is important to wear loose and comfortable shoes and avoid prolonged walking.

2. Ingrown Nail Syndrome (Onychocryptosis)

This condition is usually caused by genetic factors or frequent local trauma. It can cause pain and lead to the nail growing into the surrounding skin. Under a doctor's guidance, medications such as chlortetracycline ointment or mupirocin ointment may be applied for treatment.

3. Paronychia

Paronychia is typically a bacterial infection resulting from injury to the nail fold. Inflammation may cause redness, swelling, and pain around the nail, and may also lead to the aforementioned symptoms. With medical guidance, topical treatments such as fusidic acid cream or clotrimazole cream can be applied.

During treatment, adequate rest is important, and strenuous physical activity should be avoided. A light diet is recommended, with avoidance of spicy or irritating foods.
