Itching of the vulva is particularly severe after menstruation.
Itching of the external genitalia after menstruation may be caused by conditions such as eczema, folliculitis, or vulvitis. Medication under a doctor's guidance can be used for treatment, as detailed below:
1. Eczema
During menstruation, the use of sanitary products can create a hot and humid environment in the genital area, making it prone to eczema. After onset, the skin of the external genitalia undergoes allergic reactions, leading to symptoms such as itching and redness. Medications such as levocetirizine hydrochloride tablets, loratadine tablets, and chlorpheniramine maleate tablets may be used as directed by a physician.
2. Folliculitis
Poor personal hygiene during menstruation may lead to folliculitis. During this condition, hair follicles become blocked, resulting in small bumps that are red, itchy, and painful. Treatment may include topical medications such as fusidic acid cream, mupirocin ointment, or erythromycin ointment, used under medical supervision.
3. Vulvitis
Local resistance decreases during menstruation, increasing susceptibility to pathogenic infections that cause vulvitis. Symptoms may include congestion and swelling of the vulva, accompanied by intense itching and pain. Under a doctor’s guidance, treatments such as Honghe Fujie Wash Solution, Jieeryin Wash Solution, or Fuyanxiao Capsules may be used.
Besides the above causes, vaginitis could also be responsible. In such cases, medications like miconazole nitrate vaginal soft capsules, Baofukang suppositories, or metronidazole tablets may be used under medical supervision. If no significant improvement is observed after 3 to 5 days of medication, discontinue use and seek medical attention promptly.
