What causes shoulder blade pain?
Generally, scapular pain may be a normal physiological phenomenon or caused by pathological conditions such as periarthritis or cervical spondylosis. Patients can receive symptomatic treatment based on the specific cause. The details are as follows:
1. Physiological Causes
If incorrect posture is maintained for a long time or if there is excessive physical strain, an accumulation of acidic substances or muscle fatigue in the scapular area may lead to soreness and discomfort. In most cases, symptoms can be relieved through heat therapy and massage, along with adequate rest and a balance between work and relaxation.
2. Pathological Causes
1) Periarthritis (Frozen Shoulder)
If there is muscle strain or aseptic inflammation around the shoulder joint, it may trigger periarthritis, causing pain in the shoulder or upper arm, possibly accompanied by restricted movement. Pain-relieving medications such as ibuprofen sustained-release capsules or loxoprofen sodium tablets may be used under medical guidance, combined with treatments like acupuncture or nerve block therapy.
2) Cervical Spondylosis
When degenerative changes occur in the cervical intervertebral discs, surrounding tissues or structures may become affected, leading to compressive pain, numbness, and stiffness. Anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs such as celecoxib capsules and vitamin B1 tablets may be prescribed, along with traction therapy.
Besides the common causes mentioned above, herpes zoster (shingles) cannot be ruled out as a potential cause; therefore, timely medical evaluation and treatment are recommended.
