Can I take a shower before having blood drawn?
Bathing is not contraindicated before blood collection. However, if the patient has a wound on the body, bathing is not recommended prior to blood draw; if there are no wounds, bathing is acceptable. The details are as follows:
1. Should not bathe
If the patient has a skin wound, bathing is not advised, because during bathing the wound may come into contact with water, potentially worsening infection and leading to local ulceration or abscess formation. Additionally, patients should avoid bathing on the day of blood collection to prevent water exposure of the wound and subsequent local infection.
2. Can bathe
If there are no wounds on the body, bathing is permissible and will not affect blood test results. Patients may bathe before or after blood collection, which helps maintain skin cleanliness.
During bathing, adequate warmth should be maintained to avoid exposure of the head and body to cold air, which might trigger stress responses such as increased heart rate, rapid breathing, or chest tightness. After bathing, the body should be dried immediately and warm clothing worn.
