Method of performing digital pressure hemostasis
Generally, digital pressure hemostasis is a simple and effective temporary method for controlling bleeding. It involves applying finger pressure on the artery along its course, at the proximal end (closer to the heart) of the wound, in order to stop the bleeding. Taking nosebleed as an example, the specific procedure is as follows:
1. The patient should sit with the head slightly tilted forward.
2. Use the thumb to press the nostril on the bleeding side, or pinch both nostrils firmly for 10–15 minutes.
3. Spit out any blood in the mouth to avoid accidental swallowing.
4. Digital pressure hemostasis is generally suitable for arterial bleeding in the head, neck, face, and limbs. It is simple and effective, although its effect is short-lived.
Therefore, in cases of severe bleeding, it is recommended to seek timely medical treatment and perform hemostasis under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
