Introduction
Dryness, pain, and crusting in one nostril may be related to trauma, atrophic rhinitis, or nasal vestibulitis, and can be treated through daily care, medication, and other interventions. Nasal trauma may damage the nasal mucosa, leading to moisture loss and resulting in dryness, pain, and crusting in the nostril. Patients can use normal saline to rinse the nasal cavity.

Dryness, pain, and crusting in one nostril may be related to trauma, atrophic rhinitis, or nasal vestibulitis. Treatment can include daily care and medication. Specific causes are analyzed as follows:

1. Trauma

Nasal trauma may damage the nasal mucosa, leading to moisture loss and resulting in dryness, pain, and crusting in the nostril. Patients can use normal saline to rinse the nasal cavity or apply erythromycin ointment locally to help relieve symptoms.

2. Atrophic Rhinitis

Atrophic rhinitis is an inflammation caused by exposure of the nasal mucosa to dry environments or dry airflows, which leads to moisture loss and discomfort in the nose. Patients may use medications such as erythromycin ointment or chlortetracycline hydrochloride ointment as directed by a physician.

3. Nasal Vestibulitis

Nasal vestibulitis is a diffuse inflammation of the skin in the nasal vestibule. Under inflammatory stimulation, symptoms such as itching, dryness, and crust formation may occur. Patients may apply mupirocin ointment or erythromycin ointment as prescribed by a doctor.

In addition to the common causes listed above, these symptoms may also be associated with conditions such as atrophic rhinitis, sinusitis, or nasopharyngeal carcinoma. If other accompanying symptoms appear, patients should promptly visit a hospital for evaluation and receive standardized treatment after the underlying cause is identified.
