Introduction
After hip replacement surgery, patients may attempt to use a bedpan for bowel movements. The patient should lie on their side, place the bedpan under the buttocks, and gently lower the anus onto the bedpan to defecate. Alternatively, sitting on a toilet may also be attempted. If bowel movement does not occur within a few days after surgery, increase intake of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, while reducing consumption of meat and sugar.

Generally, after hip replacement surgery, patients need to pay attention to many issues, including bowel movements. The specific procedures are as follows:

1. Bed rest. Avoid excessive physical activity and increase fiber intake to promote intestinal motility.

2. Use a bedpan for defecation. Position the patient on their side, place the bedpan under the buttocks, and gently lower the anus onto the bedpan to pass stool.

3. Attempt to use a seated toilet. Choose a toilet with an appropriate height to avoid bending the knees and hips excessively. Be careful not to strain during bowel movements to prevent injury to the surgical wound.

If bowel movements do not occur within a few days after surgery, increase the intake of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, while reducing consumption of meat and sugar. When necessary, take mild laxatives or stool softeners under a doctor’s guidance to assist with bowel movements.
