Basic Techniques of Lumbar Massage and Manipulation
Under normal circumstances, the muscles in the lower back are relatively thick, making them suitable for massage techniques such as finger acupoint pressing, fist rolling, and palm-heel kneading. The specific procedures are as follows:
1. The practitioner should clean their hands thoroughly and apply massage oil.
2. The patient stands with feet shoulder-width apart. The practitioner places both palms on either side of the patient's lower back, using the heel of the palm to knead the lumbar muscles and surrounding ligaments and tendons. This effectively relaxes soft tissues and improves local blood circulation.
3. The patient lies prone. Locate the acupoints Shenshu (BL23) and Mingmen (GV4). Shenshu is located 1.5 cun (approximately two finger widths) lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of the second lumbar vertebra. Mingmen lies between the spinous processes of the second and third lumbar vertebrae. Use the pads of both thumbs to massage these points, which helps promote blood circulation, remove blood stasis, and unblock meridians.
4. The patient resumes a standing position and makes loose fists with both hands, using the knuckles to gently tap both sides of the waist for approximately three minutes.
After lumbar massage therapy, the patient should rest on a firm bed, avoid exposure to cold, maintain proper posture, and refrain from heavy physical labor. It is recommended that lumbar massage be performed at a reputable medical facility by qualified healthcare professionals.
