What is cervical lymphadenitis, and what should be done about it?
In general, lateral cervical lymphadenitis may be caused by factors such as unhealthy lifestyle habits, upper respiratory tract infections, tonsillitis, dental caries, or chronic diseases that have been difficult to treat over a long period. Symptomatic treatment is required. Specific causes are analyzed as follows:
1. Unhealthy lifestyle habits
Patients who smoke, drink alcohol, consume spicy and irritating foods, stay up late, experience excessive fatigue, or suffer from high levels of mental stress may disrupt the body's immune regulation system, potentially leading to lymphadenitis.
2. Upper respiratory tract infection
Viral or bacterial infections may cause upper respiratory tract infections. When such an infection occurs, the body's immune system initiates a defense response in the infected area, including activation of lymph nodes. The lateral cervical lymph nodes are among the lymph nodes in the head and neck region and play a role in filtering and eliminating pathogens within the immune system. During an upper respiratory tract infection, these lymph nodes may become swollen and painful, resulting in lateral cervical lymphadenitis. Patients can take medications such as acetaminophen tablets or ibuprofen sustained-release capsules under medical guidance and should ensure adequate rest.
3. Tonsillitis
The tonsils are lymphoid tissues located in the oropharynx and are part of the body’s immune system. When the tonsils become infected by pathogens, the immune system increases its defensive response in this area, causing activation of nearby lymph nodes, which may involve the lateral cervical lymph nodes and lead to lateral cervical lymphadenitis. Patients can use medications such as compound Honeysuckle granules or amoxicillin capsules under medical supervision, while increasing fluid intake.
4. Dental caries
When tooth surfaces are infected and eroded by bacteria, failure to receive timely treatment may allow the bacteria to spread further into surrounding tissues and lymph nodes, causing lateral cervical lymphadenitis. Patients can take medications such as artificial bezoar metronidazole capsules or bezoar detoxifying tablets under medical guidance.
5. Chronic diseases with prolonged ineffective treatment
If patients already suffer from chronic conditions such as chronic pharyngitis, chronic tonsillitis, or laryngopharyngitis, these ongoing illnesses may contribute to lateral cervical lymphadenitis. In such cases, targeted treatment of the underlying chronic disease should be conducted under medical supervision.
If discomfort symptoms occur, patients are advised to seek timely medical attention.
