Can nipples itch during pregnancy?
Women may experience itchy nipples during pregnancy.
Pregnancy, or gestation, causes hormonal changes in the body that stimulate breast enlargement—essentially a second phase of breast development. During this process, symptoms such as nipple tenderness or itching may occur, which is considered normal. Another possible cause is poor personal hygiene. After conception, a pregnant woman's metabolism increases, making her more prone to sweating. If underwear is not changed promptly, secretions from the nipples can accumulate and cause irritation or itching if not cleaned regularly. It is generally recommended to maintain good hygiene of the breasts and nipples. Pregnant women should wear cotton bras to minimize pressure and irritation. If nipple itching is severe, gently cleaning the area daily with warm water is advisable; avoid using alkaline soaps on the nipples. In most cases, symptoms ease after the first trimester, although some women may experience them throughout the entire pregnancy.
However, if the itching is severe and accompanied by a local rash, it is important to undergo appropriate medical evaluations to determine the underlying cause and follow the doctor’s recommendations for treatment.
