What are the medicinal effects and functions of Atractylodes (Baizhu)?
Atractylodes is the dried rhizome of the plant *Atractylodes macrocephala* Koidz., belonging to the Compositae family. Generally, Atractylodes possesses various therapeutic effects, including strengthening the spleen and boosting qi, preventing gastrointestinal ulcers, drying dampness and promoting urination, stopping perspiration, and stabilizing pregnancy. Specific details are as follows:
1. Spleen-Strengthening and Qi-Tonifying
Atractylodes has a sweet, warm, bitter, and drying nature. It can both tonify and strengthen the spleen while drying dampness, making it effective for treating various conditions caused by spleen deficiency. For cases of spleen and stomach deficiency-cold with abdominal pain and diarrhea, it is commonly combined with ginseng, dried ginger, and honey-fried licorice.
2. Prevention of Gastrointestinal Ulcers
Atractylodes exerts a significant protective effect on the gastrointestinal tract by reducing damage from irritants to the gastric mucosa, promoting gastrointestinal motility, and improving digestive function. It also regulates gastric acid secretion, lowers gastric juice concentration, and reduces the output of gastric acid and pepsin. Appropriate use provides clear protection to the gastric mucosa and effectively prevents ulcer formation.

3. Drying Dampness and Promoting Urination
Entering the spleen meridian, Atractylodes not only strengthens the spleen and boosts qi but also dries dampness and promotes water metabolism. In treating phlegm-dampness, it is commonly used with cinnamon twig (Guizhi), Poria (Fuling), and licorice. For edema and poor urination, it is often combined with Poria and Alisma (Zexie).
4. Stopping Perspiration
Atractylodes strengthens the spleen and boosts qi, reinforcing the exterior and arresting spontaneous sweating. It is indicated for individuals with spleen-lung qi deficiency and exterior deficiency leading to spontaneous sweating, and is frequently combined with Astragalus (Huangqi) and Saposhnikovia (Fangfeng).
5. Stabilizing Pregnancy
Sweet in taste and entering the spleen meridian, Atractylodes tonifies spleen qi and is used for fetal restlessness due to qi deficiency. It is commonly paired with Codonopsis (Dangshen) and Poria. If accompanied by kidney deficiency, it may be combined with Eucommia (Duzhong), Dipsacus (Xuduan), and Cuscuta (Tusizi).
It should be noted that Atractylodes is warm and drying in nature; therefore, it should be used with caution in individuals with yin deficiency and internal heat or insufficient body fluids. It must be used appropriately under the guidance of a physician. If discomfort occurs, patients are advised to seek timely medical consultation to facilitate recovery.
